What is a ductless heat pump?
Also called a mini-split heat pump, it is a heating and cooling system that doesn’t require ductwork. It consists of an outdoor unit and one or more indoor units mounted on the wall or ceiling.
How does a ductless heat pump work in Victoria’s Climate?
Great! It transfers heat between the indoor and outdoor units. In heating mode, it extracts heat from the outdoor air and brings it inside to warm your home. In cooling mode, it removes heat from inside your home and releases it outside.
4 Types Available
- Floor Mounted: These units are placed on the floor, typically near an outside wall and adjacent to a window for easy connection to the outdoor heat pump. They are suitable for efficient heating and cooling in rooms of various sizes.
- Wall Mounted: Smaller in size to floor units, wall-mounted units can be installed higher up on the wall, making them suitable for larger rooms like the living room or master bedroom. They provide effective temperature control while minimizing obstruction.
- Slim Duct: These vents resemble the floor vents commonly found in homes but are installed in the ceiling. Slim ducts are ideal for larger rooms that tend to have temperature inconsistencies. You can connect multiple units (ranging from 2 to 8) and strategically place them throughout your home to achieve consistent and comfortable temperatures. Zoning capabilities allow for individual control of different areas.
- Cassette: Cassette units are rectangular in shape and distribute air through all four sides. They are well-suited for large, square rooms with no partition walls hindering airflow. Cassette units provide effective heating and cooling while ensuring optimal air circulation.
These different types of ductless splits offer versatile solutions for maintaining comfortable indoor temperatures in various room layouts and sizes.
SINGLE ZONE SYSTEMS
Single zone systems provide excellent comfort when you need to cool and heat one room or area of your home—such as an attic, basement, or add-on. Single zone systems allow one outdoor unit to power one indoor unit and most do not require any ductwork. Indoor units can be wall mounted and controlled via a controller or through an easy-to-use app.
MULTI ZONE SYSTEMS
Multi Zone heating and mini split systems provide flexible temperature comfort in new residential buildings, older home renovations, and business spaces without the need for ductwork. By matching one outdoor unit with a variety of indoor units, these systems offer efficient cooling and heating of indoor climates with the ability to control temperatures across multiple rooms.
Choosing the Right Size Heat Pump for Your Victoria BC Home
Ductless heat pumps come in various sizes, each with a specific BTU range. You want a heat pump that matches or slightly exceeds your home’s calculated BTU requirement.
Common heat pump sizes and their BTU ranges:
9,000 BTU: 250-450 square feet
12,000 BTU: 450-550 square feet
18,000 BTU: 550-1,000 square feet
24,000 BTU: 1,000-1,500 square feet
30,000 BTU: 1,500-2,000 square feet
The above are just approximations as many factors go into determining the right size unit for your home’s heating and cooling needs. Other than square footage, you also need to consider the number of doors and windows, the ceiling height, the number of people living in the home, and how many heat-generating appliances (such as ovens, dryers etc) exist in the home.
Fortunately, our helpful heat pump installers will guide you through the whole process and determine which size unit you need before the scheduled date for your heat
